The

Make your own toggle clasp:

Materials for making your own toggle clasp:

One 5.0 cm length of 1.6ga sterling silver wire (for toggle bar)

One 1.6/8.0 mm sterling silver jump ring for the clasp

Four 1.0/3.5 mm sterling silver jump rings to attach the clasp and bar

a) To make the toggle bar, take a 5.0 cm length of wire, and using the tip of your round nose pliers make a single loop in the centre. Use the flat nosed pliers to keep this straight and tight.

b) Flush cut the two ends off the wire, so the total length of the toggle is 16 mm. Smooth the ends with an emery board if necessary. A simple rule for making toggle clasps is that the bar should be approximately double the inner diameter of the ring.

A complete sterling silver toggle clasp materials kit pack can be found on our clasps page. A copper toggle clasp kit is also available. And if you just need a length of 1.6 mm sterling silver wire, you can find a 6.0 mm length of it on our other supplies page.

We would like to thank George Harper for allowing us to include her directions for making your own toggle clasp. George is a very talented jewellery designer, and you can see George’s work on her lovely website: designed by george

.

These instructions were also featured in the May 2009 issue of Beads & Beyond (pages 48 and 49) as part of a wonderful project by George: the captured ball bracelet

If you would like to make this project, the jump rings you will need are:

15 large jump rings, 1.6/8.0 mm inner diameter

28 medium jump rings, 1.0/6.5 mm inner diameter

6 small jump rings, 1.0/3.5 mm inner diameter
